The Sigma Xi USF chapter announced its first Student Grant Program to support research for both undergraduate and graduate students in Fall 2022.

The spring cycle of the Student Grant Program received 5 applications (3 graduates and 2 undergraduate students). The proposals were all very well written and competitive. The Chapter officers ranked the applicants and awarded 2 graduates (~$700 each) and 2 undergraduate students (~$300 each).

Graduate Recipients - Spring 2024

  • Colin Goodman, Ph.D. candidate, Deban Lab, Department of Integrative Biology.
“Muscles, motor patterns, and movement: what explains interspecific variation in thermal performance curves?”
  • Fernanda Silva Pimenta, PhD student, Department of Chemical, Biological and Materials Engineering. “Landfill Gas to Produce Liquid Fuels and Chemicals using an Eggshell Catalyst”

Undergraduate Recipients - Spring 2024

  • Kira M. Ruiz-Houston, Bachelor of Science in Microbiology, Minor in Infection Control; Minor in General Public Health. “Functional Analysis of Novel Holin Proteins in Mycobacteria Phage D29.”
  • Daniela Zamora Alviarez, B.S. Mechanical Engineering. “Characterization of Graphene Monolayer and Bilayers for Electrocatalysis”

Graduate Recipient - Fall 2023
Sunhye Kim, Ph.D. Geology program - Year 4.
Research mentor: Dr. Patricia Spellman.
Award will be used to analyze water samples and to purchase sampling materials. Project title: Quantifying the impact of farming on karst spring water quality.

I'm in my fourth year of a Ph.D. program in Geology at USF. I became interested in hydrology while obtaining a master’s degree at Yonsei Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) in South Korea. My research areas include karst hydrogeology, groundwater geochemistry, and modeling hydrological systems.

Karst springs in northern Florida have observed increases in specific conductance and changes in major ions apart from nitrate. I previously participated in a project to develop an understanding of shallow versus deep water sources on spring water quality changes in northern Florida by performing isotopic and geochemical analysis. Using the Sigma Xi grant, I plan to develop a mixing model to quantify fraction of source water contributions to spring discharge. This model will provide an improved understanding of the causes of increased major ions, including sulfate (SO42-) and potassium (K+) in spring discharge, and recommend appropriate water resource management action.

Undergraduate Recipient - Fall 2022
Lauren Trumbull, B.S. Integrative Animal Biology
Research mentor: Dr. Mark Margres
Award will be used for RP-HPLC runs at USF core facility for 61 venom samples

I am currently a fourth year undergraduate student at USF studying Integrative Animal Biology and Nutrition. Outside of my schoolwork, I spend my time conducting research and snake husbandry in the Margres lab, volunteering with sea turtles at Clearwater Marine Aquarium, and learning to play the violin! I plan to attend veterinary school after completing my undergraduate degree, and hope to continue my contributions to research as a veterinarian.

I have been an active member of the lab for two years, and have participated in several projects (two of which have been published). Last summer, I was given the opportunity to present one of my projects at the Pathogens and Natural Toxins e-Conference. I was nominated to join Sigma Xi in the spring of 2022. Since becoming a member, I have been able to build deeper connections with other researchers. Sigma Xi has provided me with more opportunities to get involved in conversations about research and STEM-related work.

As a Sigma Xi undergraduate grant recipient, I am able to conduct an independent project through the Margres lab! I plan to attend veterinary school after completing my undergraduate degree, and I hope to continue contributing to research as a veterinarian. Conducting my own project and publishing a paper as the first author will provide me with valuable experience for the career I plan to pursue.
