Florida Certification Examinations FTCE/FELE)

FTCE – Florida Teacher Certification Examinations

The state of Florida requires passing scores on teacher examinations for admission into teacher education programs and for graduation from teacher education programs. These include:

  • General Knowledge Test (GKT) – for admittance
  • Professional Education Test (PEd) – for graduation
  • Subject Area Examinations (SAE) – for graduation

Beginning Effective Teacher Candidate: A beginning effective teacher candidate demonstrates sufficient knowledge of subject matter, curriculum, research-based instructional strategies, professional responsibilities and standards, and use of student data to inform practice so that the candidate has a high likelihood of positively impacting the learning, as well as the behavior and dispositions, of diverse students (Fldoe.org).

Examinations

General Knowledge Test: An exam of basic skills that consists of four subtests: Essay, English Language Skills (ELS), Reading, and Mathematics. Completion of all portions of the General Knowledge Test with passing scores is required for admission to SOE for the Bachelor degree in Elementary Education, the Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Elementary Education, and the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Secondary English Education. No exemptions or waivers are acceptable.

Professional Education Test: A test of pedagogy and professional practices. Passing the appropriate FTCE Professional Education subtests is required prior to the final Clinical Education Semester for all SOE programs that lead to certification.

Subject Area Examinations: There are 42 different SAEs, including Elementary Education K–6 and English 6–12.  Passing the appropriate FTCE Subject Area subtests is required prior to the final Clinical Education Semester.  Candidates seeking teaching certification in elementary education through the Bachelor in Elementary Education degree program or through the Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Elementary Education degree program must pass the Elementary Education K-6 Subject Area Examination.  Candidates in the Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Secondary English Education must past the English 6-12 examination.
