College of Science & Mathematics
“Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.”
― Carl Sagan
The Biology degree program at USF Sarasota-Manatee offers students hands-on experience both in the lab and out in the field–the experience necessary to pursue a career in many fields related to biology and the knowledge required to pursue graduate-level studies. Biology students at USFSM also have access to coursework offered through a partnership with Mote Marine Laboratory, where they can work side-by-side with working professionals in the marine science industry.
Graduates of this program demonstrate knowledge in three sub-disciplines of biology: cellular and molecular biology, organismal biology, and ecology and evolution. Students are consistently engaged in the scientific process through the planning, execution and interpretation of laboratory or field studies.
With a degree in hand, our students are able to analyze ethical challenges and practices in the biological sciences, perform qualitative and quantitative analyses to evaluate scientific information, and demonstrate communication skills necessary for oral and written presentations of biological research.
Is the Biology Program Right for You?
Are you a creative person who likes to ask questions about everything? Are you interested in the sciences and often pay close attention to the details? Are you always motivated to find answers to in-depth questions? If so, a degree in Biology will open the right doors for you.
Biology is one of the fastest-growing academic disciplines at USFSM. Our professors in the College of Science and Mathematics teach both lecture and laboratory-based sections. This allows faculty to get to know students on an individual basis. Many of our faculty members also conduct research each year and often invite students to collaborate in their investigations.
Mote Marine Laboratory
USFSM’s Biology program collaborates with the world-renowned Mote Marine Laboratory, allowing students to be immersed in ongoing research and community engagement in the marine sciences. Research scientists from Mote also teach various courses in the USFSM Biology program. These experiences prepare our students to be competitive for an even wider range of graduate programs and professional schools.
Most students who pursue a B.S. degree in Biology take their knowledge on to graduate programs or medical schools. Biology degrees often lead to careers in a number of rewarding fields including:
