Dr. Lora Kosten is a Level II Instructor at USF Sarasota-Manatee. She has served as Faculty Coordinator for the USF Sarasota-Manatee Instructional Site in North Port, and helped established the Office of Community Engagement where she coordinated, policies, programs and practices that align with USFSM’s Strategic Planning Goal and that assist USFSM in becoming classified for Carnegie Community Engagement recognition. She now teaches courses for the College of Liberal Arts and Social Science and the School of Education. In addition, she is the lead person for the Leadership Studies minor and certificate.

Dr. Kosten received her Ph.D. in Humanities from Salve Regina University; was employed as a teacher and principal in the Central Falls, Rhode Island School District, and served on the adjunct faculty at Rhode Island College for almost ten years. Her C.A.G.S. field project for curriculum and instruction supported professional development as a means to improve attitudes and practices of teachers regarding the N.C.T.M. Standards, and her dissertation research addressed parental involvement in education through Family Science and Technology Workshops.

She has a strong interest in research on the impact of poverty on children’s wellness and academics and is a member of the Duvall Family Studies Committee that helps emphasize collaborations among university researchers and community practitioners who can utilize family studies research findings. In 2011, she participated in the Gulf Coast Leadership Institute and learned the importance of giving back to the community. She donates hand painted items to silent auctions to help raise money for various non-profit organizations and she conducts collections of toiletries for the homeless. Dr. Kosten is honored to be on the faculty at USF Sarasota-Manatee.
