Director of Community Engagement
Dr. Lora Kosten serves as the Director of Community Engagement at USF Sarasota-Manatee where she is working in this new position to coordinate activities, structures, policies, programs and practices that address community engagement. These initiatives align with USFSM’s Strategic Planning Goal:
Build and be known for a community engagement identity in partnership with a variety of organizations throughout the service area.
She also teaches courses in elementary education methods, foundations of education, leadership studies, and was formerly Faculty Coordinator for USF Sarasota-Manatee at North Port.
Dr. Kosten received her Ph.D. in Humanities from Salve Regina University; was employed as a teacher and principal in the Central Falls, Rhode Island School District, and served on the adjunct faculty at Rhode Island College for almost ten years. Her C.A.G.S. field project for curriculum and instruction supported professional development as a means to improve attitudes and practices of teachers regarding the N.C.T.M. Standards, and her dissertation research addressed parental involvement in education through Family Science and Technology Workshops. She has a strong interest in research to improve academic achievement of children in literacy through the integration of the arts, and is honored to be on the faculty at USF Sarasota-Manatee. She looks forward to the many exciting opportunities through the Office of Community Engagement in assisting USFSM become classified for Carnegie Community Engagement recognition.
