Dr. Jane A Rose is the Dean of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences. Prior to her arrival at USF Sarasota-Manatee, Dr. Rose served as Assistant to the Vice President for Academic Affairs at Georgia College & State University (GCSU). In this capacity, she developed and managed university-wide systems of assessment and served as liaison to SACS and other accrediting agencies, as well as the university system’s Board of Regents, on issues of assessment, institutional effectiveness, and accountability. Before serving in the Office of Academic Affairs at GCSU, Dr. Rose was the Interim Chair of the Department of English, Speech, and Journalism. Prior to that, she was the Director of Women’s Studies. Dr. Jane A Rose is the Dean of Arts & Sciences for the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee.

Dr. Rose brings to administration twenty-five years in higher education. Most of that time has been spent as a member of the faculty, teaching English. Her teaching areas include all facets of American literature, women writers, and multicultural literature. She has also developed and taught interdisciplinary courses in women’s studies and humanities. As a faculty member and an administrator, Dr. Rose has been very involved in efforts to revise general education, seeking an outcomes based, engaging, liberal-arts curriculum.

Her scholarship is in the area of feminist theory and criticism, with publications focused on the critical recovery of nineteenth-century women writers. She has published a book on early American realist Rebecca Harding Davis. Currently, however, her research interest has moved to the twenty-first century, as she is in the early stages of a book project on the novels of Nobel laureate Toni Morrison. A globe-trotter at heart, another passion for Dr. Rose is internationalizing the curriculum. She has taught and lectured in China, Japan, India, and the Czech Republic. And she has also led students in study abroad in Italy. Here at home, she has found fulfilling volunteer work in ESL classes, helping immigrant students master English.
