Dr. Carlos A. Santamaria is an Assistant Professor of Biology at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee. He spent his childhood in Venezuela where he developed an interest in invertebrate zoology and in the evolution of marine invertebrates. He earned his B.Sc. and Ph.D. at Texas A&M University, where his dissertation focused on the evolution of Ligia isopods in three geologically dynamic regions. His research focuses on cryptic biodiversity and phylogeography of coastal isopods from highly biodiverse and geologically active regions. His research has taken him to places such as Hawai’i, Palau, Micronesia, the Caribbean Islands, the Mediterranean, and the Baja Peninsula. He also indulges on applied population and conservation genetics projects. He arrived at USFSM after spending two years at Sam Houston State University where he taught introductory biology courses. At USF-SM he will teach Biodiversity, as well as Ecology and Evolution.
