Instructional Design


The Instructional Designers at E-Learning Services are available by appointment for consultation and development of online courses and faculty training. Instructional Designers stay current in the theories, methods, and technologies that improve online learning and are an invaluable resource when creating and managing online courses.

Whether you are developing a brand new online course or updating one that you have taught for several semesters, we are ready to share informed feedback and assist with the design and development of your course. Examples of the services we offer include:

  • Helping you to transition PowerPoint slides, Word documents, or other written media into interactive online content
  • Assisting you to develop a course map to better ensure alignment between the essential elements of your course
  • Providing suggestions on how to organize course content for ease of delivery and student access, easing instructor burdens and encouraging student engagement

 Course Administration


All faculty are required to make use of the following Canvas-integrated tools for the classes they teach. E-Learning Services provides routine guidance on the use of these USF System administered technologies; non-routine technical issues are forwarded for resolution by USF Information Technology.

First Day Attendance

The USF System requires faculty to report student first day attendance. Faculty use the First Day Attendance (FDA) tool, located in their Canvas course navigation, to submit this record electronically. Using the FDA tool as soon as possible will prevent financial implications for both students and the University. Students that have not been marked as present prior to the end of the first week of classes will be automatically dis-enrolled from your course.

If You Are Teaching Online: Utilize the FDA tool once you instruct students how they should demonstrate that they intend to participate in the course. For example, complete and return a form, complete an introductory assignment, etc.

If Students Register Late: If students appear on your roster after First Day Attendance has been submitted, but fail to attend, please contact the Office of the Registrar at telltheregistrar@usf.edu to request those students be dropped from your course.

eGrades Submission

Instructors at USFSM use the eGrades system, accessed through Canvas, to submit student midterm and final course grades. Instructors have the option of automatically pulling grades from their Canvas course gradebook, or entering them manually.

When an instructor assigns a student an F, I or U grade in eGrades, they are required to supply a last date of attendance for that student. Instructors who use Canvas can look back at a student’s activity to help establish the last documented academic activity the student completed.


Instructional Technology


Instructional technology refers to the online teaching tools that instructors may use during the delivery of their courses. Information and resources for those most commonly employed at USFSM follow below. Learning Management System: Canvas

Canvas is the Learning Management System (LMS) used by instructors at USFSM to manage online class content. Depending on course format, faculty may choose to use Canvas to distribute lecture materials, assignments, exams, grades, and/or course announcements.

Online Exam Proctoring: Proctorio

Automated proctoring for online tests is available to all faculty, via Proctorio. This browser-based software integrates with Canvas and can be enabled in any course, for any Canvas Quiz. Use of this tool requires the Chrome desktop web browser.

Lecture Capture: Panopto

Panopto enables faculty to record and deliver lecture video incorporating multiple media streams. Faculty may choose to record and combine camera video, microphone audio, computer audio, PowerPoint/Keynote presentations, and/or their desktop screen. Panopto integrates with Canvas and is enabled on a per-course basis.

Virtual Classroom: Blackboard Collaborate Ultra

Blackboard Collaborate Ultra offers faculty a means of scheduling virtual, synchronous class meetings in their online or hybrid class. Faculty have the option to record these meetings for later reference. While this tool will function in any modern web browser, advanced features, such as application sharing, require use of Chrome or Firefox.

Plagiarism Check: Turnitin

Turnitin provides faculty with a means to check written student work for potentially plagiarized material. It is integrated into all Canvas courses by default and enabled on a per-assignment basis.


Software Access & Training


Productivity Software: Microsoft Office 365 for Business

Get Microsoft Office: USFSM faculty and staff are provided with a Microsoft Office 365 for Business subscription. This subscription gives access to the latest version of Microsoft Office, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, OneDrive, OneNote, and Skype for Business. A desktop version of each program is available to download and install on your computer (if your computer is a Windows PC issued by Technology Services, it comes with many Microsoft Office programs preinstalled).

The Office 365 application switcher is accessed by clicking a button, which appears as a series of square blocks arranged in a 3-by-3 grid.Access Office Online: Online versions are also available. To access Microsoft Office online, select “USF Office 365” from the “Email” drop-down menu on the MyUSF web portal. This opens the web-based version of Outlook. To change programs, use the application switcher located in the upper-left corner of your web browser screen (the location may vary if viewed on a mobile device).

Manage Files and Collaborate Efficiently: You can use OneDrive to store and sync files across your devices. OneDrive also allows you to share Microsoft Office files with other Office 365 users to collaborate in real time. Easily markup, edit, comment on, or view files without needing to track or update document versions; everyone works on the same file, changes can be reverted, and the file owner can change sharing settings at any time.

Go Beyond Email: You can use Skype for Business to instant message or call colleagues at USFSM (and USF), attach a Skype Meeting to an Outlook appointment, and collaborate in real time with with people both inside and outside the university. While E-Learning Services recommends Blackboard Collaborate Ultra for virtual classroom sessions, Skype for Business is a good alternative for online meetings outside the context of a Canvas course.

USF Application Gateway

The USF System provides remote, online access to a variety of commonly used programs that may otherwise be difficult or expensive to obtain. Note that accessing these programs requires installation of the Citrix Receiver application, that programs accessed in this way will run more slowly than those installed on your computer, and special steps are required in order to save your work and avoid data loss. Please follow the guidance provided at the gateway site carefully.

Technical Skills Development

The USF System provides free subscriptions to two alternative platforms for technical skills development. (Both can be found under the “Learning and Teaching Tools” section of the MyUSF web portal.) Each are useful if you are trying to get started with a new program, would like to better understand the advanced features of programs you are already working with, or are generally interested in improving your relationship with technology.
