SARASOTA (January 20, 2015) – The upcoming University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee Knowledge-A-Bull Speaker Series will feature a panel of world-renown chefs who will discuss global cuisine and how it relates to the local tourism culture in the Sarasota-Manatee area. The panel of experts will also examine how cuisine shapes the education of our globally trained students in USFSM’s College of Hospitality & Tourism Leadership. The event will be held on Thursday February 19, 2015 in USF Sarasota-Manatee’s Selby Auditorium at 5:30 p.m. with a reception to follow. The event is open to the public at no cost.
Global Cuisine. Global Education., moderated by ABC7’s Chef Judi Gallagher, will feature chefs Yaron Azuolay, Jamie Gregorich, Darwin Santa Maria, Giuliano Hazan as well as USFSM alumna Sheena Maini.
Moderator and Chef Judi Gallagher can be found cooking gourmet meals as ABC 7’s culinary director on the daily “Chef Judi’s Dish” show; running the thriving public relations firm Judi Gallagher & Associates; teaching courses at the University of South Florida’s College of Hospitality & Tourism Leadership; writing and editing for six print publications; or hosting demos with chefs throughout the world. Judi has enjoyed 30-plus years of successful ownership, management and consulting experience in the food service industry. She shares her expertise by consulting for restaurants and hospitality projects throughout Southwest Florida and the nation.
Chef Yaron Azuolay serves as the Chef in charge of demonstrations and training for live cooking with Nyga Chef in Nordia, Israel. He previously served as Head Chef at Bakery 29 in Tel Aviv, Israel. With over twenty years of experience as a lead chef, Azuolay specializes in seafood preparation, as well as French and Spanish cuisine, and is positively reviewed in countless Israeli national and urban news journals.
Chef Jamie Gregorich appeared on season six of Chef Gordon Ramsey’s Fox TV Show “Hell’s Kitchen” in 2009. She currently serves as the Manatee Technical Institute’s Culinary Arts Department Chair and Lead Instructor. Prior to her position with MTI, Gregorich spent six years as the Executive Sous Chef at Euphemia Haye Restaurant on Longboat Key.
Chef Darwin Santa Maria was born in Peru, but came to America at age 13 where he later attended Johnson & Wales culinary college. Santa Maria worked as sous chef at Michael’s on East and in 2001, Food & Wine Magazine named him one of the top 10 chefs in the nation. In 2011, he opened Darwin’s on 4th in downtown Sarasota to share his blend of urban, local and global cuisine alongside Darwin Brewing Company’s craft beers in an intimate, upscale setting.
Giuliano Hazan is an award winning author of 5 best-selling cookbooks, and teachers Italian cooking classes throughout the U.S. and at his school in Italy. In 2007, Giuliano received the Cooking Teacher of the Year Award from the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP), which “honors an individual who demonstrates and effectively communicates an exceptional knowledge of culinary studies and techniques in a vocational, avocational or traveling teacher capacity. He is a regular guest on the Today Show and has been a guest on the nationally syndicated PBS show, Seasonings. His school in Italy has been featured by the Fine Living network and he is often a guest on local TV shows in cities to which he is traveling.
Sheena Maini is co-owner of the Tandoor Indian Cuisine, the original Indian restaurant in Sarasota, Florida. Being in the restaurant business since the age of 16, she has accumulated a vast knowledge of how to run a successful business. She has been a crucial part in taking this small family restaurant to the next level with continuing prosperity. Maini graduated from USF Sarasota-Manatee with a degree in Finance and Management in 2010.
University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee is offering the free, public Knowledge-A-Bull speaker series which engages students, faculty, staff, alumni and the community in cutting-edge conversations with experts on subjects that have relevance in our lives. Each college within USF Sarasota-Manatee (College of Education, College of Business, College of Hospitality & Tourism Leadership and College of Arts & Sciences) host topics in the series.
