USFSM professor uses expertise to benefit community, joins Revitalization Task Force on Longboat Key

Ross Alander, Instructor of Management in the College of Business at USF Sarasota-Manatee was recently appointed to the Revitalization Task Force on Longboat Key where he is a resident.  The task force is made up of other residents and business professionals who will analyze how to bring more business to the key and what types of business to target as well as preserving the uniqueness and beauty of LBK.

One of Alander’s areas of expertise and teaching areas is Organizational Review/Assessment.  “We are hoping to grow the key with business that makes sense for the area,” said Alander.  “For example, we’ll ask questions like ‘how do we grow the possibility of small to medium sized conventions at local hotels?’ and ‘would it make sense to develop some athletic excellence centers for tennis or kayaking or golf; or maybe even a high-end cooking school?’  We’ve not started hashing through any ideas just yet, but that’s the purpose of this group.”

Alander also participated on the Organizational Review Committee for Longboat Key last year and was tasked specifically with analyzing Planning, Zoning & Building.  “We worked closely with the Manager in that department and the report we developed was adopted by the town commission,” Alander said.  “It was a success.”
