SARASOTA, Fla. (July 29, 2016) Dr. Patrick Moreo might still be new to USF Sarasota-Manatee, but the recently named dean of the College of Hospitality & Tourism Leadership (CHTL) is already bringing international attention to the campus.

Dr. Moreo this week confided he was bestowed the top award at a recent meeting of the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education, or the International CHRIE.

The organization, comprised of top academics across the hospitality field, presented Dr. Moreo with the Howard B. Meek Award for lifetime achievement.

Coming on the heels of a teaching career that’s spanned more than 30 years, Dr. Moreo said the award amounted to the highest recognition yet of his work and contribution to hospitality education.

“I very proud, obviously, and very humbled,” he said of the honor, presented July 22 in Dallas at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center. “This is something that comes from your peers. You don’t apply for it. You’re nominated for it by someone else.”

The International CHRIE’s website says of the award, “[It’s] the highest individual recognition a member of ICHRIE may receive. It is presented to an ICHRIE member in recognition of the individual’s lifetime contributions and outstanding service both to hospitality education and to International CHRIE.

“This award serves as a living memorial to the late Howard B. Meek, a pioneer in American hospitality education, the first dean of the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University and an Executive Vice President of ICHRIE.”

Dr. Moreo said he learned of the recognition in April as he was transitioning to USFSM from the University of Nevada Las Vegas’ William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration, where he was a professor and associate dean. He officially assumed his duties at the CHTL on July 1.

“I was shocked. I wasn’t expecting it,” he said. “The only thing more exciting than this was getting married and having my children. Getting my PhD was pretty cool, too.”

The award not only recognizes Dr. Moreo for his work, but it shines a spotlight on USFSM as it works with Dr. Moreo to create a prominent “boutique” hospitality program.

“I would like to congratulate Dr. Moreo for this great honor,” said Dr. Sandra Stone, regional chancellor at USF Sarasota-Manatee. “This award speaks volumes about the respect that he has from his peers throughout the hospitality education industry. We are so fortunate to have him at USF Sarasota-Manatee to guide our College of Hospitality & Tourism Leadership into the future.”
