USF Sarasota-Manatee to Hold Spring Commencement on Sunday, May 8

On Sunday, May 8, the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee will confer degrees upon 254 students.  Almost 3,000 people are expected to attend the Spring 2011 commencement ceremony, which will take place at the Manatee Civic and Convention Center in Palmetto at 2:00 p.m. USF President Dr. Judy Genshaft will preside over the ceremony.

This Spring, 21 master’s degree candidates will receive graduate degrees and over twenty percent of the graduating class will graduate with academic honors.  USF Sarasota-Manatee offers degrees in business, education, accounting, finance, marketing, criminology, English, information technology, history, interdisciplinary social sciences, psychology, hospitality management and more.

Special honorees at the ceremony include:

Outstanding Professor Award — Dr. James Curran, associate professor of Marketing in the College of Business.  Honorees for the Outstanding Professor Award at USF Sarasota-Manatee share a sincere involvement with their students, passion for the university and its mission, and a commitment to excellence through education.   Dr. Curran has more than 35 years of experience working and researching in the field of marketing. His research interests include services marketing, customer loyalty, the use of technologies in marketing, and customer relationship management.

King O’Neal Scholar (perfect 4.0 GPA) — Sarah Fredrickson, College of Arts and Sciences.  A tradition since 1988, the King O’Neal award denotes a student who has maintained a 4.0 grade point average and is given each semester by the Alumni Association in honor of charter graduates Lucas King and Evelyn O’Neal.  While at USFSM, Sarah was a member of Phi Sigma Theta National Honor Society, was actively involved in psychology research, and was selected as a presenter at the USF Undergraduate Research Symposium in 2011.  Sarah will graduate from USFSM with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and plans to pursue her doctorate degree at Roosevelt University in Chicago.

Golden Bull AwardJami Worley, College of Arts and Sciences.  The Golden Bull Award is presented by the Student Government Organization to a student who has shown excellence in leadership activities, community involvement, university involvement and academic success.  At USFSM, Jami was president of the Psychology Club and Circle K International, a Student Ambassador, and a Student Senator while taking up to 23 credit hours per semester. Jami also volunteers with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Animal Network of Manatee County, the Florida Guardian ad litem Program, and has been involved with starting a USFSM chapter of Psi Chi, the International Society of Psychology Majors.  Jami will graduate USFSM with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and plans to pursue her master’s degree at USF St Petersburg.

The Outstanding Graduate AwardBrittany Gleitsman, School of Hotel and Restaurant Management. The Outstanding Senior Award is sponsored by the Alumni Association to recognize one graduating senior each semester that has demonstrated exceptional achievements in the following:  leadership, community service, work experience and school spirit.  The Outstanding Graduate must have at least a 3.5 GPA and must receive two letters of recommendation to be considered for this award.  As president of the USFSM Student Government Association, Brittany was involved with the Angel Tree project, Homecoming, Club Rush, USF Sarasota-Manatee Day, the Get on the Bus football game, and is a founding member of Environmental SustainaBULLS.  Brittany holds a bachelor’s degree from USFSM in Marketing and will graduate with a second bachelor’s in Hospitality Management.  She currently works at Sarasota Bay Estuary Program as a marketing intern and has a strong passion for the environment and the community.

The Spring 2011 graduates of USF Sarasota-Manatee represent traditional and non-traditional students. Among non-traditional students, many of this year’s graduates worked full-time while attending school — balancing family, work and school responsibilities.
