USF Sarasota-Manatee to celebrate and honor veterans on November 9

On Tuesday, November 9, the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee will honor the members of the U.S. Armed Forces, including USF Sarasota-Manatee student, staff, faculty, and alumni veterans, by hosting a Veterans Day Ceremony from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Selby Auditorium.  The university will be closed on November 11 to observe the holiday.

The Sarasota Military Academy will begin the program with the presentation of colors.  Speakers at the event will include Sean Abene, member of the Air National Guard and current student in the Information Technology program at USF Sarasota-Manatee and Robert Parker Fondes, author of From the Attic to Military Museums: How to Honor Your Family by Donating and Preserving Military History and member of the Lifelong Learning Academy at USF Sarasota-Manatee.

Manatee Operation Troop Support, which is a nonprofit organization serving families and soldiers who are currently deployed overseas, will be in the courtyard immediately after the ceremony to accept cash donations in order to put together care packages for overseas troops.  Guests will also be invited to fill out postcards with well-wishes for the troops.    Also present will be the Military Assistance Program, which , supports Afghan and Iraqi veterans or active military personnel and their families, and a Local Veteran Employment Representative (LVER) and Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist (DVOP) with the Suncoast Workforce, who will provide employment assistance and job training for veterans and disabled veterans.

“We’re so proud to honor those who have fought and continue to fight for our freedom,” said Toni Ripo, Career Services coordinator at USFSM and organizer of the event.  Many of our students, staff, faculty, alumni, and their families are veterans or active military, and there is no way we could thank them enough for their service.”
