The University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee (USFSM) Global Initiative has announced World Engagement Week from Monday, March 26th through Friday, March 30th to benefit ShelterBox USA. Several activities are planned for the week to raise money to send at least one box to an area in need.
“A goal of the Global Initiative is to make connections between local and global issues relevant to the USFSM community,” said Dr. Robin Danzak, Assistant Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders at USFSM. “We are so excited that Shelter Box, an international disaster relief organization, has its US headquarters right here, in Lakewood Ranch. What a wonderful opportunity for USFSM to participate by building awareness and reaching out to help people served by Shelter Box around the world.” An anonymous donor has agreed to match the fundraising efforts of the University up to $500 toward the first box purchased. The total cost for one ShelterBox is $1,000. Donations from the community will be accepted to help purchase the Shelter Box.
Nine students at USFSM and one of their professors will be camping out in a ShelterBox Tent on campus for two nights during the week to bring awareness to the organization and assist in the fundraising efforts. “The shelter box is one of the most innovative solutions to disaster relief and to improving the lives of those who are currently experiencing homelessness,” said Jessica Johnson, one of the nine USFSM students who will sleep in the Shelter Box tent. “I want to participate to gain a deeper sense of compassion for others, and gratitude for everything I have.”
The USFSM Global Initiative has several other activities planned for World Engagement Week: a Yoga class, a presentation on homelessness in the region, an artisan market, a Latin Dance presentation with a free Salsa lesson, and more. The community is invited to attend the ShelterBox kickoff event, where the students will be moving into the tent, on Tuesday, March 27th at noon in the Courtyard at USF Sarasota-Manatee, 8350 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. For more information about World Engagement Week, please contact Robin Danzak at firstname.lastname@example.org .
