Former Miss America serves as ambassador for diabetes awareness

Nicole Johnson, executive director of USF Health’s “Bringing Science Home” and former Miss America, visited USF Sarasota-Manatee to help kick off fundraising for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Walk to Cure Diabetes, which was held on March 26.  USFSM’s Regional Chancellor Dr. Arthur Guilford chaired the event, for which USFSM raised over $2,000.

Johnson, who won the Miss America title in 1999, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 1993 and is now a diabetes advocate. She has served as an international consultant and spokesperson for diabetes issues for more than eleven years and has worked tirelessly promoting awareness, prevention and early detection of the disease.
